The iPhone 5S and 5C went on sale in the UK at 8 a.m. this morning and by 8:05 a.m., a few were already damaged.
Members of the warranty protection company SquareTrade waited in line at a store and then headed outside with the new phones to see just how they handled being dropped. With the help of its drop testing machine — called the “Phone Terminator” — both phones plummeted six feet onto the street.

The result? They held up fairly well. The iPhone 5S was only slightly chipped, but the 5C was a little more damaged, with chips near the phone’s camera and a few scratches on the screen. Both phones, however, came away from the fall still working, and without any damage that would effect their use.
Over the course of the weekend SquareTrade plans on performing more drop tests on the phones, including a test that includes submerging the phones in water.
